The 2024 Bridge Building challenge took off at DSS on 6 March with 11 teams competing for the school title. The competition is always a tense affair with everyone anticipating the eventual and final break of each bridge.
Tom Joubert, Sphelele Memela and Noah Vogel took the first prize with their bridge carrying a weight of 80kg before breaking. The 2nd position was taken by Alex Gideon, Caleb Schmunk and Owen Witthoft. Their bridge carried 90kg. The bridge that took 3rd position carried 80kg. The bridge was designed and built by Ludwig McGill, Stefan Vilciu and Tim Walz.
Mr du Toit who manages the school competition, explained that there are other factors such as aesthetics and the weight of bridge that affect the overall performance, besides the weight the bridge carries. These extra points made the difference in the final scores of the competing teams this year.
