Kids on Air is aired every Saturday from 8.05 – 9.00am on a local community radio station, Radio Khwezi (90.5 & 107.7 FM). The target audience is children from 5-13 years of age. The programme objectives are to educate, inform and entertain the listeners. Kids on Air is mentored by Miss Makhosi Maphumulo. Thirteen children take it in turns to co-host the programme.
Kids on Air recently won R30 000 in the SABC Community Media Awards 2008 held in Johannesburg on 30 May. The competition was open to community radio stations. There were several categories in which the radio stations could enter: Best Presenters, Best Producers, Excellence in Journalism, Excellence in Broadcasting in Indigenous Languages, Excellence in Developmental Journalism, Excellence in Investigative Journalism, Excellence in In-Depth News Coverage & Current Affairs, Best Overall Winner
Kids on Air entered The Best Presenter category with a programme entitled World Water Day. The magazine programme, presented by Siwe Cele (Grade 5) and Nontokozo Mchunu (Grade 6), was compiled of music, drama, story telling and an interview with a guest from Water Affairs.
Kids on Air won The Best Presenter category with prize money of R10 000 as well as The Best Overall Winner category with a money prize of R20 000 together with awards and certificates. Congratulations!
