For the first time Project Based Learning was introduced into the DSS curriculum.
PBL is an initiative used increasingly by more schools to encourage independent, real-life learning. The Grade 6, 8 and 9 classes were introduced to a focus theme and, based on their own initiative, came up with solutions.
The Grade 6 class focussed on “Making a difference in your community”, the Grade 8 class on “What makes society work well?” and the Grade 9 class on starting a business to solve unemployment in South Africa.
Learners were given approximately twenty hours over a five-week period to come up with solutions, which culminated in a group presentation to parents on 11 and 12 June.
