A 2-hour boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary on 21 October was the setting for the 2016 Grade 9 outing.
Learners were treated to an informative nature tour at the St Lucia estuary, one of the tourist attractions of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. It is one of Africa’s largest estuaries, 85km in length. Our tour guide shared some very interesting facts regarding this popular tourist destination:
• The estuary contains 1300 crocodiles and 900 hippos.
• A crocodile can jump out of the water at a speed of up to 71km per hour.
• Hippos weigh up to 3,5 tones but can run up to 50 km per hour and can bite a crocodile in half.
Although we had to travel more than three hours to reach our destination, this experience made the long drive more than worthwhile, while a scrumptious KFC burger, chips and coke made the trip back more than bearable.
