6:00am on 10 March was the time set for the Grade 10 girls departure to their community service venue – Maqhogo, in the Tugela valley, a 90 minute drive from home.
On day one, the girls were split into two groups. One group spring cleaned the church hall at the Maqhogo branch of Kwasizabantu Mission and helped clean the crèche area at the back of the hall. The other group went to Thabankulu, where they worked at a community shop to prepare a field for planting. On day two, both groups joined forces in the field, working hard with hoes and spades. The short breaks in between were much appreciated! It was challenging and exhausting but it gave the girls the opportunity to serve people who do not cross their paths everyday.
